Nelms Family in England

Cook NELMS was baptised on 18 Jan 1795 at Shabbington, Buckinghamshire and married Harriet LOVEGROVE at Great Haseley on 13 Sep 1824. Witnesses at Cook and Harriet's wedding included Richard Shrimpton and John Cooper. Harriet was baptised at Great Haseley on 10 Oct 1802 and her father was John LOVEGROVE who was baptised at Great Haseley on 4 Aug 1770. The 1851 census lists Cook as 'Tetsworth Turnpike Gatekeeper'. Cook and Harriet's children were Maryanne (26 Dec 1824), John(1828-1903), Henry (13 Mar 1831-10 Jan 1834), Alfred (9 Jun 1833-1 Mar 1855), Elizabeth (25 Dec 1836-18 Aug 1837) and Elizabeth (19 May 1839-18 Jul 1848). Maryanne and John were baptised at Great Haseley; the others were baptised at Great Milton. Harriet was buried at Great Milton on 3 Jan 1869 and Cook on 8 May 1870.

Cook's father was also Cook NELMS. Cook Snr was baptised Cook Elms at Shabbington on 23 Mar 1766. He married Mary NORTH at Shabbington on 26 April 1791 (after banns had been published on 20 Feb, 27 Feb and 6 Mar). The curate, Thomas Plaskett, married them and the witnesses were William Tipping and Mary Broom. Mary was baptised at Ickford, Bucks on 13 Jul 1761 and died in 1834. Her parents were Thomas NORTH and Mary. Cook was buried on 22 Jun 1834 and Mary was buried on 30 Mar 1834. Cook and Mary's children were all baptised at Shabbington and were Thomas (25 Dec 1791), George (23 Jul 1793), Cook (18 Jan 1795), Josiah (25 Jun 1797), James (19 May 1799), Rebekah (2 May 1802) and Susannah (25 Dec 1809).

Cook Snr's father was John ELMS Jnr who was baptised at Shabbington on 31 Mar 1739 and was buried at Shabbington on 1 Jan 1807. He married Elizabeth CLAYDON of Thame on 22 Sep 1761. Their children (all baptised at Shabbington) were George (2 Feb 1762), twins Susannah and Ann (baptised 5 Apr 1763 and Susannah was buried on 17 Apr 1763), Susannah (11 Oct 1764), Cook (23 Mar 1766), Elizabeth (27 Dec 1768), Thomas (11 Oct 1769), Mary (1771), Sarah (4 Apr 1773-1808), Hannah (17 Apr 1775), John (20 Apr 1777), Patty (20 Apr 1779) and James (17 Mar 1782).

Note: entries up to 1770 were ELMS; after 1770 they were NELMS.

John's father was John ELMS Snr. He and his wife Elizabeth had the following children baptised at Shabbington: Elizabeth (15 Jul 1735 - buried 12 Oct 1735), Elizabeth (17 Oct 1736), John (31 Mar 1739), Mary (17 Jul 1743), twins William and Ann (1 Mar 1746 - Ann was buried 22 May 1749 and William was buried on 26 Nov 1779). Elizabeth, the wife of John, was buried on 10 Jul 1759 and on 22 Sep 1765 he married Mary CLAYDON of Thame. John, who was listed as Clerk of the Parish, was buried at Shabbington on 24 Jan 1774 and Mary was buried on 7 Apr 1785.
